With his vote needed by Republican leaders to help advance a bid by Republicans to repeal another rule from the Obama Administration, Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) flew back to Washington from Atlanta on Thursday morning, and then provided the key vote that allowed Vice President Mike Pence to break a 50-50 tie in the favor of the GOP.

“I’m doing great,” Isakson told well-wishers as he was brought in and out of the Senate chamber in a wheelchair, as Isakson has been recovering from spinal surgery earlier this year.

“I was gonna try and make a trip back this week to begin to get my legs under me and my recovery,” Isakson told reporters after casting his vote.

“We didn’t know what at the time it would be, but it turned out to be the Vice President’s tie-breaker,” Isakson said.

Asked if he would be back next week for votes – and possible nuclear option rules change – related to Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, Isakson seemed ready.

“As often as I can be back,” Isakson said – but then he added: “One week at a time.”
