After delaying an event set for today to name Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate because of last night’s terror attack in France, Donald Trump instead used Twitter to make that announcement on Friday morning, selecting a Governor and former member of Congress who has been seen by many as a reliable conservative during his years in politics.

“He’s in many ways sort of the anti-Trump, but he has a strong record, a long record as a strong conservative,” said Rep. Luke Messer (R-IN), who replaced Pence in Congress, after Pence was elected Governor of Indiana in 2012.

“This is a great day for conservatism and great news for conservatives,” said Matt Schlapp of the American Conservative Union of the Pence pick.

“He is a proven leader who has worked with grassroots conservatives to advance policies and solutions that strengthen our economy, our national defense, and our families,” Schlapp added.

“As a successful governor in Indiana, the Vice Presidential pick of Mike Pence will bring an added dimension to the race,” said Florida GOP Chair Blaise Ingoglia.

“Governor Pence is a proven leader,” said Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN).

But there was some grumbling within Republican circles, as activists like Ann Coulter and others said the choice of Pence was not a good move by Trump.

Many conservatives have been aggravated with Pence for months, after he backed down in a very public fight over religious liberty laws in Indiana, which opponents said would allow for legalized discrimination against gays and lesbians.

As for Democrats, they swiftly tried to tag Pence as being too conservative.

They also went back to find some of Pence’s own comments about plans from Donald Trump – as Pence has voiced opposition to Trump’s idea of banning Muslims from entering the United States.
